I admit, I've made a conscious decision to live in Florida (ok, my partner dragged me here kicking and screaming 10 years ago, but I've tried to make the best of it.)
But I swear there are times when it's clear that the powers that be in Florida are doing their best to outdo Texas when it comes to lunacy.
Today's gem...the legislature is considering an amendment to Florida's adoption statutes that would prohibit adoption agencies from asking about firearm's ownership. Follow me below the fold for why this drives me batty.
Here's the linkto a story on this from the Broward-Palm Beach Times.
So why does this bother me so? Because Florida is the only state in the union that specifically prohibits adoption by homosexuals (the term in the state statue, not mine.)
The only conclusion I can draw from this is the preference to placing a needy child in a home full of weapons rather than in a loving same-sex home.
The only good that may come out of this is that several Democratic allies (yes the Repugs have a 2:1 majority everywhere in Florida thanks to creative gerrymandering) in Tallahassee have files their own amendment when this comes up later today to strike the ban on homosexuals from current law.
It may be a moot point in the very near future as 3 different courts have ruled that the state ban is unconstitutional. Unfortunately, the right-wing is sitting ready to pounce with a proposed constitutional amendment, should that occur.
We'll find out later today how this battle plays out.
